Our tour bus dropped us off at this magnificent sight...the Mendenhall Glacier. It is formed by the Juneau ice fields and was created about 3000 years ago. The ice extends down into the water approximately 155-200 feet.
My favorite part of our Alaskan adventure... 17 hours and 35 minutes of daylight!!!
A BrEaThTaKiNg sight...it was really interesting to learn how ALL that ice was formed. It comes from large amounts of snow falling and becoming packed on top of deeper layers. The compression causes the deeper layers to become ice. This ice then moves down the mountain with no mercy. There are places in the Tongass National Park where large granite rocks have been deposited by this miracle of nature...and, let's just be honest...Ava found and climbed on EVERY one!!!
Where does that BLUE color come from??
Well, I am SO glad you asked. When the ice becomes very compressed it squeezes all the air bubbles out. In the absence of the air, the reds and yellows in the color spectrum are absorbed allowing the blues and greens to be reflected.
We were a little disappointed that it was an overcast, gray day but quickly learned that it was perfect for viewing the fabulous colors in the glacier! We had some good luck after all...
Really...could I go to Alaska and pass up an opportunity to HIKE?? No way! Goes to show ya'll how far I will go for a good photo op :)
Yep...more ROCKS...
This was such a sweet & precious moment. So gentle and touching...I am so blessed to have such a patient partner to parent with...
Somewhere on this hike I thought about the last cruise we took, to Mexico. I realized {and was pleasantly happy about this realization} that Alaska is an ACTIVE cruise destination. There are no lounge chairs and fruity drinks in my memories!
Nugget Falls~
And, our sweet little three year old walked the whole 3/4 miles. We did carry her on the way back - mostly because we spent too much time Oohing and Ahhing that we had to walk super fast to get back to the bus!
