Skagway and the train

Day 2 was a stop in Skagway, Alaska. This was a neat little town with an interesting historical tale...

Skagway was an important town during the gold rush. Men would come here to take the White Pass trail {and later the railroad} to the Yukon territory to pan for gold. Many men and women made the climb over this mountain on foot with pack animals. I'm sure the trip was much easier when the railroad was completed... We took the train ride the 16 miles or so up the mountain.

Snow got a little deeper up in the mountains...they had a train engine equipped with a huge snow blower-

The town itself had many shops and a few musuems of what times would have been like. One of our favorite stops was the brothel, The Red Onion Saloon. Holding true to history, you could tour the "brothel" portion of the saloon for "5$ for 15 minutes". The waitresses were dressed appropriately as the ladies would have during the glory days of the saloon. We had a nice little snack here...the pizza and sandwiches were amazing!
